Today i was on Ben Nevis walking to the summit via the mountain path which is the only walking route to the summit. The average time up and down the mountain is about 7 hours and today we were bang on that.
We started early as the guys were completing the 3 peaks challenge over 3 days, so they had to drive to the Lakes this afternoon. This also meant that we beat the heat of the day and the majority of people setting off.
We made good time to the summit in 3.5 hours keeping a steady pace throughout. We got to the snow at around 1200m which continued to the summit. The snow was soft in the sun and warmer temperatures but it was still chilly on the summit, around 3 degrees.
There is still about 1.5meters of depth to the snow on the summit which will stick around well towards July.
On the descent, which is often found to be harder we took the same time down as knees were starting to creek on the hard, stepped path.
A good day to be up high on the UKs highest peak.
